Santa Maria de Roses
Inside the Ciutadella de Roses, we find the remains of the Benedictine monastery of Santa Maria de Roses. The building was constructed on the remains of the ancient Greek settlement of Rodhe, and it was consecrated in the year 1060.
The peace that the territory experienced thanks to the conquest of Charlemagne allowed society to reorganize administratively and gather around the old Greek colony. In this context of stability, the Benedictine monks founded the monastery of Santa Maria around the year 960.
The monastery experienced moments of great economic prosperity that allowed for the expansion of its dependencies and the construction of a new church during the 11th century. Its decline began in the 15th century due to various factors, including pirate raids, wars, and the impact of the plague epidemic.
