Sant Pere del Bosc Sanctuary
Sant Pere del Bosc heritage ensemble is majestically located in a natural setting surrounded by woods about five kilometres from the centre of Lloret de Mar. It is one of the most emblematic spots on the Costa Brava. A haven of peace and tranquillity, the pride of the people of Lloret, which during its history has housed a monastery, an asylum, and more recently an hotel.
The original building dates from the 10th century. It was a Benedictine monastery until it was burnt down by French troops at the end of the 17th century. After these events, the monks abandoned it to move to the Sant Pere de Galligants community.
The original hermitage was rebuilt in 1789 in the Baroque style, a work that was financed by the fishermen's guild of Lloret. But Sant Pere del Bosc's heyday did not come until 1860, when the indiano Nicolau Font - popularly known as the Count of Jaruco - acquired the monastery and all the adjacent land, known as Jaruco County. Nicolau Font considerably reformed the monastery, converting it into the current manor house of great historical and patrimonial interest.
In 1911, a marble monument to Mr. Nicolau Font was erected in the Plaça de Sant Pere del Bosc, in gratitude for his generosity and contribution to the heritage of the town of Lloret.
It is worth walking through the Jaruco County to Sant Pere del Bosc along the old road, as it was done at the beginning of the 20th century, discovering the monument of l'Angel and the Creu de Terme (pieces of great architectural value built in the time of Nicolau Font). We can enjoy a relaxing day at the present-day Sant Pere del Bosc, eating in its restaurant or spending a night at the Hotel Spa Sant Pere del Bosc, which now occupies the site of the old manor house.
