Sant Pere de Galligants
The monastery of Sant Pere de Galligants is located next to the Sant Daniel valley in Girona, near the north entrance of the city.
Its origins can be traced back to a pre-Romanesque monastery built sometime in the first half of the 10th century. The current building, which includes the church and the cloister, began construction during the first half of the 12th century and has become one of the most remarkable examples of Catalan Romanesque architecture.
The monumental complex was occupied by a community of Benedictine monks, although its monastic activity began to decline in the 15th century. Finally, the monastery was abandoned in 1835 as a result of the disentailment process.
In 1870, the building was converted into the headquarters of the Archaeological Museum of Catalonia in Girona, a function it still retains today. The museum exhibits archaeological materials from various sites in the province of Girona.
Sant Pere de Galligants is one of the main points of interest to consider when planning a visit to historic Girona.
