Montjuic Castle
The Montjuïc Castle is located in the highest part of the northern side of the city of Girona, at an altitude of 219 meters.
We find its origin in the mid-17th century. Once the War of the Reapers was over, Girona became a strategic defensive enclave against the threat posed by the French army.
During the sieges that took place during the War of the French, the fortress played a very important defensive role for the city of Girona. In 1811, it was occupied by French troops, while in 1814 it was dynamited by the same occupying army at the time of their retreat.
Currently, the Montjuïc fortress is very damaged. It is very likely that between the late 19th century and the early 20th century, the site was frequently used as a quarry and fell into decline.
